What Will I Learn In This Course?
This is a 1.5 hour online self-study course where participants will be introduced to all the components of the 2025 consensus definition of primary care PT. The course sheds light on the future of the ABPTS primary care clinical specialization petition process and defines the role of a physical therapist as a primary care provider in various care models. Participants will learn the difference between primary, secondary and tertiary care providers in the context of entry into the healthcare system. They will also learn what education, training and competencies are important for primary care physical therapists (PCPTs). The course provides an overview of the settings and populations where PCPTs can be utilized and offers frameworks for various access to care pathways. The course concludes with a brief discussion on financial and payment considerations and motivates the audience to find a starting point.
Who Is My Instructor?
Dr. Katie O'Bright, PT, DPT, OCS is a physical therapist and educator who has spent the majority of her career in multidisciplinary primary care settings. She started her career as an active duty Army PT where she worked in a Solider Centered Medical Home, co-located with primary care physicians, psychologists and other valued support staff. Since then, she has worked in multidisciplinary care settings in academic health systems and private practices.
Dr. O'Bright founded Redefine Health Education with the mission of getting more physical therapists into team-based care settings, starting with primary care. She currently lives in Chicago with her husband and two sons.

Course Objectives
Define primary care physical therapy and understand its role within the healthcare system.
Identify the benefits of physical therapy in primary care, including improved patient outcomes and enhanced healthcare efficiency.
Analyze barriers to care, including social determinants of health (SDoH), and develop strategies to address these barriers in clinical practice.
Advocate for the role of physical therapists in primary care and learn effective collaboration techniques with physicians.
Distinguish between professional, jurisdictional, and personal scope of practice, and understand what it looks like to work in a primary care setting
